How to Season a New Humidor:
The Right Way

The most common mistake new collectors make is over-seasoning — soaking cedar with a wet sponge and warping the wood permanently. Here is the correct method, the correct timing, and the exact RH checkpoints to hit before loading a single cigar.

Humidor Seasoning
Seasoning is the process of introducing moisture into a new humidor's interior cedar lining before cigars are stored. Unaged Spanish cedar is hygroscopic — it aggressively draws moisture from its environment, including from your cigars. Seasoning pre-saturates the cedar so it reaches equilibrium before cigars are loaded. A correctly seasoned humidor stabilizes at the target RH and stops drawing moisture from your collection. An incorrectly seasoned humidor (too fast, too much water, tap water) warps the wood, disrupts the seal, and creates mold conditions.

Why Seasoning Matters — The Science

Spanish cedar is the standard interior lining for quality humidors because it is naturally resistant to mold, repels tobacco beetles, and absorbs and releases moisture slowly — acting as a humidity buffer. But new cedar is moisture-hungry. Bone-dry from manufacturing, it will immediately begin pulling moisture from anything in its environment — including the essential oils in your wrapper leaves.

A $500 cigar stored in an unseasoned humidor will lose wrapper flexibility, oil content, and aging potential within weeks. Seasoning is not optional for passive humidors — it is the foundation of the entire storage system. For electric humidors, the role of cedar changes — but seasoning still matters for the first loading. See the electric vs traditional humidor comparison for why.

✓ Why Distilled Water — Not Tap

Tap water contains dissolved minerals (calcium, magnesium), chlorine, and biological material. When applied to cedar, these minerals deposit on the wood surface and in the grain, creating white residue, potentially clogging any humidification elements, and introducing bacteria. Distilled water is pure H₂O — it absorbs into the cedar cleanly with no residue or contamination. Holt's Cigar Company and Boveda both specify distilled water exclusively for humidor seasoning and maintenance.

The Correct 5-Step Seasoning Method

1
Wipe interior cedar with distilled water
Using a clean, lint-free cloth dampened (not soaked) with distilled water, wipe all interior cedar surfaces — walls, trays, dividers, lid lining. The cedar should be visibly damp but not dripping. Wring out the cloth thoroughly before each wipe. Do not pour water onto cedar surfaces.
⚠ Never use a soaking-wet sponge or pour water directly. Excess water warps cedar and breaks the seal — permanently.
2
Place a shot glass of distilled water inside
Fill a small shot glass or shallow dish with distilled water and place it on the bottom tray of the humidor — away from the cedar walls. This creates ambient moisture in the closed space as it evaporates. Do not place water-soaked sponges directly against cedar.
✓ Some collectors use a small Boveda 84% RH pack at this stage — it releases moisture slowly and more precisely than an open water dish.
3
Close and leave for 24 hours
Close the humidor lid completely and do not open it for a minimum of 24 hours. During this time, the cedar will absorb moisture from both the wiped surface and the evaporating water dish. Opening the humidor resets this process — resist the temptation to check until 24 hours have passed.
4
Check interior RH with a calibrated hygrometer
After 24 hours, place a calibrated digital hygrometer inside and close the lid for 1–2 hours. Check the reading. Target: 65–70% RH before loading cigars. If reading is below 60% RH, the cedar is still drawing moisture — repeat Steps 1–3 for another 24 hours. If reading is above 75%, leave the lid cracked for 2 hours, then recheck.
✓ Always calibrate your hygrometer using the salt test method or a Boveda calibration kit before trusting its readings.
5
Hold at target RH for 24 hours before loading
Once the humidor holds 65–70% RH for a full 24-hour period without intervention, it is seasoned. Now load your cigars and install your regular humidification source (2-way packs, beads, or electric system). Do not load cigars until this stability checkpoint is confirmed.
✓ Total seasoning time: 48–72 hours is correct. If it takes 5–7 days, your humidor may have a seal issue.

Common Mistakes — and What They Cost You

Mistake What Happens How to Fix
Using tap water Mineral deposits on cedar, potential mold introduction, clogged humidification elements Always distilled water only. If already done, wipe down with distilled water cloth and air out for 48 hours.
Soaking cedar with a wet sponge Cedar swells and warps. Lid no longer seals. Permanent damage in most cases. Cannot be reversed if wood has warped. Prevention only: damp cloth, not wet sponge.
Loading cigars too soon Unseasoned cedar draws moisture from cigars. Wrappers dry and crack in first week. Remove cigars, finish seasoning, reload after RH stabilizes at 65–70% for 24 hours.
Opening during seasoning Resets moisture buildup. Extends seasoning time by 24–48 hours per opening. Leave completely closed. Set a timer and wait.
Not calibrating hygrometer Readings off by 5–10%. Cigars stored at wrong RH for months without knowing. Calibrate with salt test or Boveda kit before trusting any reading.

Electric Humidor Owners

Do You Need to Season an Electric Humidor?

Raching and Yohtron electric humidors use active semiconductor humidity control — they do not rely on seasoned cedar to maintain RH. They will reach and hold your target humidity automatically on first use. However, units with Spanish cedar interior lining still benefit from a light 24-hour seasoning before loading — a single damp-cloth wipe and a small water dish, closed for 24 hours — to prevent the fresh cedar from pulling moisture from your cigars during the first days. After that, the electric system handles everything. No ongoing maintenance, no seasonal re-seasoning, no checking packs. See the humidor accuracy guide for how electric precision compares to passive systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to season a new humidor?
A new humidor takes 48–72 hours to season properly using the distilled water wipe method. The cedar must stabilize at 65–70% RH for a full 24 hours before loading cigars. Rushing the process with excess water causes cedar warping and permanent seal damage.
Do you need to season an electric humidor?
Electric humidors like Raching and Yohtron use active humidity control — they don't rely on seasoned cedar. However, a light 24-hour seasoning (damp cloth wipe, small water dish) is still recommended for units with Spanish cedar interior to prevent fresh cedar from pulling moisture from cigars during the first week.
Can you use tap water to season a humidor?
No. Always use distilled water. Tap water contains minerals and chlorine that deposit on cedar, potentially introduce mold spores, and can clog humidification elements. Distilled water absorbs cleanly with no residue.
Why does my humidor not hold humidity after seasoning?
The most common causes are: cedar still drawing moisture (insufficient seasoning time), an airtight seal failure (gasket or lid warped), exhausted humidification source, or ambient conditions too dry. Electric humidors eliminate all of these failure points with active semiconductor control.
What is the correct humidity for seasoning a humidor?
During seasoning, aim for the interior to stabilize at 65–70% RH before loading cigars. Do not load until the humidor has held the target range for at least 24 hours. See our ideal humidity guide for the full data on RH targets.
